Some 80 American companies in the pharmaceutical, transport, technology and agricultural sectors participated in the trade fair.
Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal invited US businesspeople to invest in the country and set up partnerships with Algerian companies and to help transfer technology.
Algeria needs a strong partnership between its national companies and their American counterparts, given that the US is the world's largest economy, he said during a visit to the US pavilion.
Sellal stressed the need to support the foundations of US-Algerian partnership, especially in the energy, agriculture and tourism sectors.
He noted that Algeria was interested in building and supporting "strong" co-operation and partnership ties with the US in priority sectors. American partnerships could also contribute to training Algerian workers and provide experience to small and medium-sized enterprises, especially in the use of modern technologies.
US Ambassador to Algeria Henry Ensher voiced similar goals. "US participation reflects my country's desire to develop its economic ties with Algeria," Ensher said.
Algerian Trade Ministry Secretary-General Aïssa Zelmati said there were 125 US companies investing in Algeria, including 70 hydrocarbon companies, as compared to just 22 companies in 2007.
The US was now Algeria's top trading partner, he noted.
"The selection of the United States as a guest of honour is an opportunity to help US companies discover the Algerian market and explore investment opportunities," explained US-Algerian Business Council chief Ismael Chikhoune. "It will also help establish sustainable partnerships profitable for both parties."
Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz paid his first visit to Algeria, where he was received by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. He also held talks with his Algerian counterpart Youcef Yousfi to discuss prospects in the energy field, especially the transfer of technology in the exploitation of shale gas.
The US official also noted opportunities for hydrocarbon exploration at sea, as well as projects in nuclear energy production and electricity-generating plants.
Moniz, who visited FIA, expressed his "admiration" for the quality of exhibited products as well as his hope that the event would "help develop co-operation between the United States and Algeria in energy and hydrocarbons sectors and other sectors as well where there are big opportunities for the two countries".
On the side-lines of the economic event, an agreement was signed between Algeria's Sonatrach and America's Varian Medical Systems to supply devices for two cancer treatment centres that the oil giant plans to build in Algiers and Hassi Messaoud. The signing ceremony was attended by the US energy secretary.
Health Minister Abdelmalek Boudiaf said Saturday that Algeria and the United States would sign a memorandum of understanding on pharmaceutical production.
"It's about a major project that will be embodied by the Algerian government and the US pharmaceutical company Pharma and that will make Algeria a hub for pharmaceutical productions in Africa and Middle East," Boudiaf added.
